The most basic definition of sin is an offense against religious or moral law. The "grey areas" get chalked up to a matter of conscience. Looking back throughout history, the church has changed its stance on certain sins while acknowledging "grey areas" that can't quite be defined. But what is sin? Every religion has their definition of sin as well as their list of sins.

I think it is safe to say that much of the focus of most Sunday church services is sin and how to avoid it.
To be brutally honest, leaving Jesus out of the equation aligns us with the pharisaical system that shed his innocent blood. Jesus is the constant and the key that should be used while reading scripture. Only when we read scripture through the lens of Christ's teachings, life, and legacy can we understand its message. Christ Jesus is our Rosetta Stone for the Bible. I believe Jesus to be the Rosetta Stone that we so desperately need to decipher, not the printed words, but the spirit behind each thought and passage. How can people read the same book and come to such different conclusions? How then do we begin to approach texts in an effort to understand how to read them? Deeply held biblical beliefs have been the origin of beauty and rebirth while at the same time, social injustice and darkness. Everyone insists that they hold the correct interpretation of scripture. It is so difficult that the attempt to decipher the Bible's message has given birth to numerous teachings, theologies, and churches. And though debates exist about translation and the difficulties of maintaining accuracy over periods of centuries and across cultures, what is more contentious is the debate over how to interpret the Bible today. The Bible itself has undergone literal translations many times over and exists in many parts of the world. The perspective and understanding piece is what brings us to the Bible and Jesus. It allowed archeologists and historians to learn and gain new understandings and perspectives of this ancient culture. Bear with me.Īs you can see, the Rosetta Stone was the crucial and foundational piece necessary to translate and understand ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. You may still be wondering how the Rosetta Stone ties in with Jesus and the Bible. To make a long story short, around 1824, French linguist Jean-Francois Champollion deciphered the Rosetta Stone and finally cracked the enigmatic hieroglyphic code. The discovery of the stone was exciting because ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were undecipherable they were a mystery. The decree on the stone was written three times, in hieroglyphics, in ancient Egyptian Demotic, and in ancient Greek. The stone contained a decree written by a group of Egyptian clergy.
